The construction industry plays a major role in economic development of any nation and constitutes a significant portion of both gross domestic product and that of employment. The industry plays a key role in satisfying a wide range of physical, economic, and social needs and contributes significantly to the fulfillment of various major national goals.

The industry is viewed as that sector of the economy which, through planning, design, construction, maintenance and repair, and operation, transforms various resources into constructed facilities. The types of public and private facilities produced range from Industrial, institutional, commercial, residential, civil engineering and roads sector all of which physical facilities play a critical and highly visible role in the process of development.

In Kenya the industry has been growing steadily over the last 10 years and the trend will continue. Players include the architects, engineers, management consultants, general contractors, heavy construction contractors, subcontractors, and construction workers, along with the owners, operators, and users of the constructed facility, insurance companies, land developers, real estate brokers, and material and equipment suppliers and manufacturers, among others.

Underpinning important role of this industry, the Excellence in Construction Industry Awards (COINA) has been initiated as a premier competition designed to recognize and honor companies/individuals for their outstanding contributions and excellence in the industry through their various activities and achievements between April 2017 – April 2018 (12 Months). The competition is open to contractors, engineers, quantity surveyors architects, developers, national and County Governments.
